Meanwhile, the life of his childhood friend Julia is derailed when she is denied entry, and she searches for magic elsewhere outside of the school. Penny and Julia go stargazing, watching a magical meteor shower. They discover that due to a surge of excess magic, the meteors begin crashing to the ground, and that magic is going haywire. Julia is determined to use her refound magic to help others.

A 13-episode order was placed for the first season in May 2015, and the series premiered on December 16, 2015, as a special preview. In January 2019, Syfy renewed the series for a fifth and final season, which ran from January 15 to April 1, 2020.
