Today, Disney has announced a six-episode documentary series about the making of Frozen 2 will premiere on Disney+ in just over a month.
A making-of docuseries for Frozen 2 is headed to Disney+ next month. Expectations were high for the sequel to the original hit 2013 film, which became a cultural phenomenon and won two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature. While the reviews suggested Frozen 2 didn’t quite reach the heights of the first film, audiences still flocked to it. After a very successful opening weekend ($130.2 million), Frozen 2 went on to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, passing The Incredibles 2 for the title. Frozen 2 thus earned the distinction of being a sequel that managed to out-gross its predecessor.
Frozen 2 sees the return of sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) as they embark on a brand new adventure. This time, they travel to a mysterious enchanted forest up north when Elsa hears a voice calling for her, and the two must uncover the secrets of the forest to save Arendelle. They are, of course, joined once again by Olaf (Josh Gad) and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff). As of right now, there are no plans for a Frozen 3, though with Disney, one can never be too sure.
Now, Disney+ has officially announced a Frozen 2 making-of documentary series will be released on the streaming service on June 26. The series, titled Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2, will be comprised of six episodes, all of which will be dropped on Disney+ on its premiere day. You can see the official announcement video in the space below:
While Disney didn’t give many specifics, it can be assumed that Into the Unknown will feature interviews with the cast, along with a look at how the animation came together. Additionally, it might discuss the music and how the filmmakers sought to create the next “Let It Go”. Much like the recently released Mandalorian docuseries, it sounds like Into the Unknown will be essential viewing for Frozen fans and those interested in the behind the scenes process in making an animated film. It can also make a great double-feature with Frozen 2 itself, which was added to Disney+ months early because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Into the Unknown isn’t the only Frozen 2-related project to surface in recent months. Back in early April, Disney announced an animated digital shorts series starring Olaf, with Gad once again providing the voice of the beloved snowman. Just like Frozen 2’s early Disney+ release, the Olaf shorts were designed to entertain those stuck at home during the ongoing pandemic. Now, they’ll get Into the Unknown to watch as well in just over a month’s time.
