Bajie joined Into the Badlands in season 2 and began as self-serving and ready to betray anyone. But with time, he became a trusting, loyal friend.

AMC’s Into the Badlands was a show full of captivating storylines, extraordinary action scenes, and stabbing — so much stabbing — packed into three seasons. Although the show was canceled, it remains memorable, especially for the many characters that added depth to the story and the captivating martial arts fights.

Bajie is one such character who joined the show in season 2 – self-serving and ready to betray anyone at the drop of a hat. But with time, he became a trustworthy and loyal friend, sticking out his neck to save the people he cared about. His story arc involved the good, bad, ugly, and honorable, making him one of the best redemption stories of the show.

Worst: He Exposed Sunny

Season 2 opened with Sunny as one of the prisoners in a mining colony. He met Bajie when they were chained to each other and forced to work together as pickers in the mines. When Bajie saw the kill marks on Sunny’s back, he figured out that he was a clipper for Quinn, but vowed to keep it a secret.

True to his self-serving nature, Bajie didn’t keep his word and he told the Engineer what he’d discovered, hoping to get a reward for the information. The Engineer was thrilled, of course, and immediately put Sunny in the fighting pit. Unfortunately, karma came early for Bajie, as he was chained to Sunny as punishment for ratting him out.

Being chained together and thrown into the fighting pit gave Sunny and Bajie an opportunity to escape in the second episode of season 2, “Force of Eagle’s Claw.” Sunny did most of the fighting and Bajie showed him the escape route.

Instead of going their separate ways once they were free and outside the mining colony, Bajie offered to help Sunny find his way back to the Badlands. In spite of Sunny being rude to him and refusing his help, Bajie went after him and followed through on his offer.

The rule of the mine where Sunny and Bajie were pickers was that each picker had to make their quota and the lowest ones would have to fight to the death in the pit. During a mining excursion in the colony in the season 2 premiere, one of the pickers happily announced that she’d found a golden ring.

Bajie asked to see what she’d found and grabbed it from her. When he realized it was something valuable, he knocked her down and called out for the guards, claiming that he’d found it instead, so he could get a reward.

Best: Saved Sunny From Silver Moon

During their journey back to the Badlands, Bajie and Sunny came across Nathaniel, former regent of the Widow’s husband, turned bounty hunter going by the name Silver Moon. Despite Sunny’s wishes not to kill anymore, Nathaniel forced him to fight so he could have an honorable death or a worthy 1,000th kill mark.

Sunny fought gallantly, stopping short of killing him, but Nathaniel wasn’t having that. When Sunny turned his back to walk away, Nathaniel picked up his sword and ran forward to attack him, but Bajie threw a sword at him and cut off his hand.

Worst: Hid His Fighting Skills

From the time they met, Sunny and Bajie were always finding themselves in one scrape or another. Sunny handled all the fighting and Bajie would throw a punch or wack someone over the head with a rock once in a while, but he mostly let Sunny take the lead.

Surprisingly, Bajie actually had great fighting skills, as Sunny discovered in episode 6, “Leopard Stalks In Snow” when Bajie revealed he was an Abbot. His skills would have come in handy all the times the two had to fight their way out of a pickle. Instead, Bajie let Sunny take on all the danger alone.

Best: Rescued Veil & Henry

Once they became friends, Bajie followed Sunny into every battle he faced. In the season 2 finale, Sunny went off to hunt down Quinn and get Veil and Henry back. Before leaving, he tasked Bajie with finding MK and bringing him to the fort where they’d meet once he rescued his family.

Bajie’s rescue mission didn’t go quite as planned, though. After escaping from the Widow’s prison with Tilda and Odessa’s help, he went after Sunny to help him take Quinn down. Thanks to Bajie, Sunny was able to get his son back.

Worst: Didn’t Want To Save Portia & Amelia

One of Bajie and Sunny’s stops on the way to the Badlands was to Nos, leader of metal traders. In exchange for Nathaniel’s sword, which Bajie took after the former regent tried to kill Sunny, Nos gave them a car to use for the final stretch of their journey and a shortcut to get there.

Portia was one of the dolls at the camp, who asked Sunny to kill Nos so she and her daughter Amelia could be free. Sunny declined the offer, but Nos found out about it and cut her face up as punishment. Of course, Sunny demanded their freedom, but Bajie was against the idea and wanted Sunny to leave them so they could go on with their journey. Luckily, Sunny decided to fight and Bajie eventually helped get Portia and Amelia away from Nos.

Bajie and Sunny came across the Abbots, who were keeping and training MK to control his gift. During a fight with the Abbots, one of them attacked Sunny with the hand of the Five Poisons, leaving him in a coma and at the brink of death.

Bajie and MK broke into the Abbot’s monastery to get medical supplies and Bajie used his knowledge from his Abbot days to bring Sunny back, just before the inner demons attacking him overwhelmed and killed him.

Worst: Sent A Signal To Azra

From season 1, Azra was painted as a paradise land, far better than the Badlands. MK, Sunny, Bajie, and The Widow all tried to find their way there, to no avail. The closest any of them came was when Bajie used Sunny’s compass to send a message to Azra. He didn’t get a response and immediately gave up, believing Azra to be a dream.

Unbeknownst to him, his message was received by Pilgrim, an old childhood friend of Sunny’s when they were in Azra who could control the gift. Under the guise of saving the world, Pilgrim and his followers came and wreaked havoc, plotting to create an army of dark ones and killing anyone who refused to convert. Although his intentions were good, calling Azra proved to be the worst thing Bajie could have done.

Best: Helped Cure Henry

In season 3, Sunny discovered his son, Henry, had the gift as well and it was making him sick. Desperate to save his son, Sunny went in search of Ankara, a healer rumored to be very powerful. Although he was reluctant at first, Bajie went along with him to get Henry cured.

They encountered many dangers along the way, such as the blind cannibals, but Bajie dutifully stayed by Sunny’s side and helped him battle them all. Even after Ankara only temporarily healed Henry, he voluntarily went with Sunny and fought the Black Lotus until they got to Pilgrim, a dangerous and powerful man, for a more permanent solution.
