Before Netflix dropped the fourth season of Lucifer, fans were already speculating about what might happen. Some of them were right.
Lucifer certainly has a dedicated fan base. When the show was canceled, the fans took it upon themselves to launch a massive effort to see it picked up again. Netflix answered the call and produced a brand new season of the supernatural drama before announcing a fifth and final season.
As the excitement over the fourth season grew so did the incredible variety of fan theories as to what would happen next. Some theories were right on the money and others were never meant to see the screen. Let’s take a look at some of the theories we’re glad became canon.
Nope: Love Is In The Air
Anyone who says they aren’t hoping to see Lucifer and Chloe together is fibbing. It’s an irresistible love story and everyone is rooting for these complicated characters to get it together. The pair spent the first three seasons of the show awkwardly flirting and avoiding their feelings. It makes for great TV but can only go on for so long before it becomes too predictable and boring.
It seems the pair aren’t meant to close the gap between them yet in season 4. As the tension continues to build between Chloe and Lucifer, every hopeless romantic is holding their breath and hoping for a fairytale. Though they got frustratingly close at the beginning of the fourth season they never manage to get it together.
Nope: She Knows Too Much
The controversial finale of season three ended things with a cliff hanger that for many fans felt rushed. Despite the unsatisfying ending and the strange pace, the episode left an indelible mark on the story. Chloe finally finds out that Lucifer isn’t an eccentric pathological liar. Lucifer gives her a glimpse of who he really is.
The detective now knows for sure that Lucifer is the devil. Will Chloe cope or will things begin to spiral out of control? It seems Chloe Decker really is as cool as a cucumber. Fans argued that mental health professional Dr. Linda should have been better equipped to handle Lucifer’s face than anyone else and she was nearly broken. No one thought Chloe could walk away undamaged but she only seems mildly frightened at first and quickly learns to accept and even admire his true form.
Nope: Prodigal Father
It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from Lucifer’s dad. For a brief time, an impression of his divine being shared a psychiatric hospital with Luci. the time spent with what he thought was his father brought up a lot of unresolved feelings for Satan and his mother.
God getting involved made every character that came into contact with him develop and deepen. Fans hoped the big guy would return to his children on earth but he remains absent. Lucifer deals with enough in season 4. It was probably for the best that fans didn’t get the satisfaction of seeing the man upstairs again.
The title of an earlier episode in season 4inspired some fan theories. Ella has never hidden the fact that she’s a woman of faith. Her character isn’t preachy and she doesn’t evangelize but she does believe and share. We all watched as Ella slowly began to doubt her faith in God.
Fans wondered if Ella would resolve her crisis of faith over the course of the fourth season. Many speculated that this would be when Ella finally closed the book on that chapter of her life. It turns out after everything she’s been through Ella still believe. She puts her cross necklace back on to show the world that questioning your faith doesn’t have to mean abandoning it.
Nope: Family Unification
Even Satan himself can’t deny, he loves his mother. Since the goddess of creation was banished to another dimension, her children have kept her memory alive on earth. With her first grandchild on the way and her loved ones making so many references to her, it seemed obvious that she might return.
Fans also longed to meet more of Amenadiel and Lucifer’s siblings from the first mention of them. The list doesn’t stop there. God was also guessed to return for this season too. Combine all of that with the fact that we’ve seen hell but not heave and you have the ingredients for a mega-theory. So many fans thought it was finally time to see the silver city or themselves but it wasn’t meant to be. Instead of reuniting in heaven Lucifer isolated himself back in hell.
Nope: Split Personalities
We see Lucifer deploy his “devil face” several times. He prances around with his wings stretched wide. He has a heart for his friends and loved ones and he hates to let them down. He’s also obsessed with punishment and makes a lot of really questionable choices. So which side of Lucifer will prevail? Good or evil?
It just so happens that when he loses the ability to change his face he also gets his wings back prompting fans to assume that Lucifer may spend the fourth season split between his better sie and his evil nature. Lucifer makes his choice in season 4 in a big way. There’s no question about it, he chooses the darkness. At least for now.
