From the first season to the last episode, these are some of the best behind the scenes photos from Modern Family.
Modern Family showed fans the beautifully hectic relationships among families. For 11 seasons, the Dunphys, Delgado-Pritchetts, and Tucker-Pritchetts proved how complex families can but nothing comes without love. Through all the ups and downs these families went through, love was at the forefront of their disagreements.
Similarly, love was the theme behind-the-scenes as well. The actors on ABC’s Modern Family all grew to love each other like they were their own family. The kids grew up on set and the adults learned from each other. Thankfully, the actors and producers took plenty of pictures from behind-the-scenes that we’re digging up for fans. Scroll below to see the magic in the making.
BTS Of “Lifetime Supply”
“Lifetime Supply” released in the third season and had heavy themes sprinkled throughout. In the Dunphy household, Phil was playing phone tag with his doctor to hear his test results, which made him think he was dying. Over at the Delgado-Pritchetts, Jay is annoyed when Manny’s dad, Javier, comes to town and takes Manny to the horse race. Jay tries to debunk everything Javier says and is surprised when Javier’s words come into fruition. According to reviews, this episode received positive feedback.
When Haley & Claire Watch Andy Get Engaged
In the episode “Summer Lovin,” Haley realizes she’s in love with Andy and can’t allow him to propose to Beth without him knowing her true feelings. The two had a deep connection and she knew there was something more to them than just friendship.
Claire follows her daughter to try and stop her and she showed up at the perfect time because just as the two women approached the beach, Andy took a knee and proposed to Beth. This led the Dunphy women to hide behind a tree.
In the pictures above, we can see the women being directed and planning the scene.
Mitchell And His Outfit Choices
Mitchell is a very dapper dresser. He prefers business casual and always looks the part. Likewise, his husband Cam is also a smart dresser but the two have very different styles. Cameron typically wears paisley and checkered print and bright colors, whereas Mitchell is a little more subtle in his fashion choices.
In the picture above, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) stands next to his and Cameron’s outfits for a scene. Adorably, he draped Cameron’s sleeve around his jacket just like they would on camera.
Season 10 Fun
Season 10 of Modern Family was supposed to be stressful because fans were warned that a character dies. While many theorized it was Stella, it ended up being Dede Pritchett. Sadly, Mitch and Claire heard the news when they were dressed in their Halloween costumes. Mitchell came as Prince Harry (top left).
In another season 10 episode (“I Love a Parade”), the whole family is excited for the Fourth of July parade, especially since Jay was acting as grand marshal that year. In the picture on the right, Ed O’Neil is seen in his grand marshal best talking about the scene.
Let’s take a walk back in time to season one. The cast and crew of Modern Family knew how special their stories were but had no idea it would last 11 seasons and steal the hearts of millions.
Above, Sofia Vergara and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are waiting behind-the-scenes until they’re ready to film. For Sofia and Jesse in particular, Modern Family made them instant celebrities. The world fell in love with the actors’ characters and relationship off-screen.
Bonjour From Paris!
In the 11th season, the families from Modern Family went to Paris to celebrate Jay’s lifetime achievement award. After spending his life dedicated to the creation and preparation of closets, Jay was finally being acknowledged for his work. Obviously, the Dunphys and Tucker-Pritchetts wouldn’t miss an opportunity to go to Paris! Cameron hilariously uses this time in Paris to show Fizbo to the world and perform for strangers in the streets of Paris. In the picture on the right, Sofia Vergara is heading back to her trailer after a chilly day of filming.
“The One That Got Away”
In season two’s “The One That Got Away,” it’s Jay’s birthday and all he wants is a birthday that’s not filled with to-do lists and parties. He wanted some quiet time fishing at the lake with no distractions. But as always, his family complicates things and his plan goes awry.
With Gloria shopping with Phil all day, the Dunphy kids create a video montage to show Jay how much they love and appreciate him. Hysterically, their video fails because they didn’t have enough footage. Above we can see the cast giggling on set while they wait on the sidelines.
By the looks of these behind-the-scenes moments, it looks like a ton of people were behind the flawlessness of the cast’s looks. It wasn’t just Haley who cared about her looks! From Alex to Manny to Claire — their look is perfectly sculpted with the helpful hands of those working on set. For makeup artists and stylists, we can only imagine how rewarding it was to see their artistic ideas come to life on camera.
Most TV shows film for 10+ hours a day to nail an episode. Thankfully, the cast has trailers where they can have some personal space and time to rest. Funny enough, it looks like Sofia Vergara fell asleep with a napkin over her face for some shuteye in front of the crew, which led all of her castmates to take selfies with her. It’s silly moments like these that make fans love (and miss) the show even more.
Modern Family: A Love Story
Modern Family really is all about love. The families fight and nag but there is fear and love behind every disagreement. While it’s a sitcom, it’s relatable for many fans.
The picture on the right shows the cast in a group hug as they performed their final scene for the series finale, and the picture on the left is a classic BTS shot of Julianna and Clive Bixby.
