This Is Us has overtaken the prime time drama market for years now, and here’s 10 movies that it’s fans are bound to love.
This Is Us premiered on NBC in 2016 and had fans immediately hooked. The reception for the series was so great that the network renewed it for a second and third season before the first had finished airing. The network continues to renew the series two seasons at a time, having just announced that there will be a fifth and a sixth season for the show.
Each season answers just as many questions about the Pearson family as it asks, leaving fans continuously coming back to discover more about their favorite characters each week. The wait time in between seasons can be long, so here is a list of films that may hold audiences over until season five premieres later this year.
License To Wed
Fans of the actress who plays Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us, Mandy Moore, will love watching her in this romantic comedy, also starring John Krasinski and the late Robin Williams.
In this feature, Mandy plays Sadie, who is about to marry Ben. The couples’ nuptials get put on the fast track when the church Sadie wants to get married in has a last minute opening. Sadie and Ben must hilariously pass a series of tests given by the reverend of the church, played by Williams.
The Last Five Years
This movie, based on the musical by the same name and written by Jason Robert Brown, is all about a couple falling in and falling out of love. The music in this film take the audience through five years of courtship and marriage until it inevitably all falls apart.
The love story will remind fans of Jack and Rebecca’s beginnings and the way this story is told, with two different timelines, will remind viewers of the brilliant structure Dan Fogelman, This Is Us creator, uses.
Because I Said So
Another movie for Mandy Moore fans to watch, and this one has even more elements similar to that of the series Moore currently stars on.
This film is all about a mother’s relationship with her children, how those lines should be balanced, and can be crossed. Moore plays the youngest of four daughters, whose mother, played by the great Diane Keaton, impedes on her love life in an attempt to help speed up her love life.
This romantic comedy is structured in a similar style to This Is Us. The story is told through different timelines of the main character’s life. In the film, Ryan Reynolds plays Will, who is telling his daughter Maya, played by Abigail Breslin, the story of how he met Maya’s mother years before she was born.
Ben tells Maya about the three loves of his life, and it’s up to her to decide which is her mom. The story also allows Ben to realize he’s still in love with one of these three women.
The Family Stone
If the tear-jerking moments of the Pearson family dynamic are a draw week after week, then The Family Stone is a great movie to watch. This movie takes place around the holidays as a family navigates there always difficult dynamics at Christmas time.
On top of that, there are a lot of changes taking place. The oldest son is preparing to propose to his uptight girlfriend, and the matriarch, played by Diane Keaton, is struggling with her health.
The writing on This is Us is incredible every week, which is why fans of the show will also love Tangled. Both Tangled and This Is Us are written by the same person, Dan Fogelman. They also both star the same actress, Mandy Moore plays Rebecca Pearson on the hit television show and voices Rapunzel in this Disney movie.
Tangled came out years before Mandy Moore landed her career-making role as the Pearson matriarch, and both Moore and Fogelman insist that the casting in each other these productions was merely a coincidence.
Stepmom a late 90’s film starring Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon, and it is a tear-jerker to say the least.
This films also examines the complicated dynamics of a modern family dealing with divorce, getting re-married, and raising children, which will make it a favorite for fans who love the Pearson family and watching all of their ups and downs.
Both the 1993 and the more recent 2019 version of the famous book written by Louisa May Alcott are films for fans of This Is Us who love watching the sibling dynamics and coming of age moments The Big Three experience throughout the series.
The bond between siblings is unlike anything else, and both This Is Us and Little Women prove that with their stories and their characters’ relationships. It’s also a guarantee that Little Women will make viewers cry just as much as they do watching the Pearson family each week.
Stuck In Love
This film tells the tale of a divorced couple and the lengths the go to find their way back to one another. It also tells the story of their children, dealing with the divorce and finding young love themselves. The family has its ups and downs, but portrays a mostly healthy family dynamic in this film, much like the Pearson family.
This film makes audiences laugh just as much as it will make them cry, which is something else it has in common with the hit prime time series.
Another film from This Is Us creator, Dan Fogelman, and this one has even more similarities to Fogelman’s hit series. In this film, different lives of different people play out, and it is revealed by the end of the story that all of these lives were somehow connected and affected by one another.
The film is a massive love story told through different couples and different circumstances, some happy and some heartbreaking. It is a must-see for fans of the Pearson family and Dan Fogelman’s work in general.
