Showtime’s Shameless features a family with a huge range of personalities, many of which can be categorized into the Hogwarts Houses of Harry Potter.
Watching Shameless is certainly a unique experience for the viewer. For some fans, witnessing the Gallaghers’ outrageous dysfunction can make them feel better about their own lives. For others, the sheer lack of morality makes them sick. Either way, Frank Gallagher and Co. will certainly make you laugh, cry, and think, for Shameless has not made it through 10 seasons of wildly successful debauchery on the back of a few cheap gags.
The characters are what make Shameless. There are some interesting plot points, but for the most part, viewers tune in because of how, uh … colorful, the cast is. This family and their associates feature a huge range of personalities, many of which can be categorized into the Hogwarts Houses from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Here are the main characters in Shameless, sorted into Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw.
Frank Gallagher – Slytherin
Frank Gallagher has a few redeeming moments on Shameless. But, for the most part, he is just the scheming, drug and alcohol-abusing, degenerate patriarch of the Gallagher family. He is largely motivated by his own self-interest, a tell-tale sign of a Slytherin, who is always trying to get ahead by any means necessary.
The show’s protagonist is also quite resourceful, another Slytherin trait. You have to give Frank Gallagher credit for one thing – he knows how to survive.
Phillip “Lip” Gallagher – Ravenclaw
“Lip” Gallagher is one of Frank Gallagher’s children, and easily the most mentally gifted. He is a genius who excels in any academic setting, barring no exterior distractions. Lip Gallagher is clever, both when in the classroom and when using his brains for immoral purposes.
This makes him a Ravenclaw, the Hogwarts house known for its intellect. Unfortunately, Lip Gallagher has inherited a few of his father’s vices, which holds back what could be a bright future. Still, his Ravenclaw-ness is always there.
Fiona Gallagher – Gryffindor
Fiona Gallagher is the oldest of the Gallagher children, and due to her father’s incompetence, she is charged with raising her younger siblings. She is fearless and there is no limit to what she will do to ensure her family’s survival, making her a quintessential Gryffindor.
Gryffindors are natural-born leaders, just like she is in the Gallagher household. Were it not for her, the whole operation would fall apart, a tall task for a young woman with her own life to live, as well. There is next to nothing that Fiona Gallagher cannot handle, however.
Ian Gallagher – Gryffindor
Ian Gallagher never seems to fit in with the rest of his family and for good reason. Spoiler alert – he is not actually Frank Gallagher’s son, but his brother’s son.
This is one of the many things that Ian Gallagher goes through, but his resolve is what keeps him standing. What’s more, he doesn’t back down from a challenge and is quite willing to lead the charge when he sees injustice taking place, with little to no care for his own well-being. This is the kind of thing a Gryffindor would do.
Debbie Gallagher – Hufflepuff
Debbie Gallagher has a kind heart, like all Hufflepuffs. She might engage in a few sinful endeavors here and there on Shameless, but hey, who doesn’t?
In the realm of the Gallaghers, the red-headed middle daughter of the household is actually quite sweet. She is one of Frank Gallagher’s few children that seem to genuinely care about him and not think he is a complete waste of space. A bit naive? Yes. But many times, a Hufflepuff just can’t help but be kind to people.
Carl Gallagher – Slytherin
Carl Gallagher was not on the right track during the first few seasons of Shameless. He showed traits of being psychotic and seemed to possess no moral compass whatsoever. He can be quite resourceful and cunning in his amoral exploits, which are Slytherin traits. As he has matured, however, so too has his personality.
Carl Gallagher is no longer on the path to a mental institution, as he has shown considerable growth and determination in finishing military school, another Slytherin characteristic. Whether you’re getting the good Carl or the bad Carl, you know what Hogwarts house you’re getting.
Liam Gallagher – Hufflepuff
Liam Gallagher was just a toddler when Shameless began. He is now beginning middle school and has progressed into a young scholar with a budding future. Liam Gallagher, like his sister Debbie, doesn’t mind being around his father. To Frank Gallagher’s credit, he has spent a considerable amount of energy on trying to mentor his youngest son – no small feat for him.
Liam Gallagher always seems relatively cheerful and unassuming, even in the face of school bullies. He is quite intelligent, much like a Ravenclaw. But his kind heart makes Hufflepuff his true calling.
Veronica “V” Fisher – Ravenclaw
Veronica “V” Fisher lives next door to the Gallaghers with her husband Kevin “Kev” Ball – more on him later. The Gallaghers’ neighbor regularly delivers sage advice to those in need, which the Gallaghers often are.
She once pursued a career in the medical field, showing that her mind is what keeps her moving forward. Her husband is not known for his intelligence, to put it lightly, so V Fisher is usually called upon to be the brains of the operation in their household, much like a Ravenclaw would be.
Kevin “Kev” Ball – Hufflepuff
Kevin “Kev” Ball is an intimidating physical presence. This betrays his soft interior, though, for Kev Ball is really just a big teddy bear and a bartender who wants everyone to get along and to raise a happy family with his wife. He is even willing to help out Frank Gallagher from time to time, despite the fact that he regularly makes a drunken scene at his bar.
Kev Ball never knew his real family growing up. Perhaps this is part of the reason he so deeply yearns for friendship and a family. Whatever the reason is for his sweet nature, Kev Ball is a quintessential Hufflepuff.
Mickey Milkovich – Gryffindor
Mickey Milkovich is Ian Gallagher’s on-again, off-again boyfriend throughout much of Shameless. It might seem strange for a character that seems to possess no semblance of care for others to be a Gryffindor, but if you examine him closer, his Hogwarts house is revealed. Mickey Milkovich has a checkered past, but the root of this lawlessness can largely be pinned on his rough upbringing and his suppressed sexuality.
Mickey Milkovich is mostly unwilling or unable to accept his homosexuality, leading him to overcompensate by trying to be a law-breaking tough guy. This is further exacerbated by his environment and his home life. Like a Gryffindor, though, he will not back down from anyone, especially when they threaten someone he cares about. He will go to any length imaginable to be with and protect the one he loves, Ian Gallagher. The Sorting Hat would surely yell “Gryffindor!” if it was placed on his head.
