Ahsoka recently found herself in a sticky situation in The Clone Wars. She used a Jedi mind trick to get out of it, breaking an important Jedi rule.
Ahsoka Tano broke an important Jedi rule in the latest episode Star Wars: The Clone Wars, for her own benefit. The light side of the Force comes with a great many abilities, and its teachings promote the responsible use of them, regardless of the situation. Now apart from the Jedi Order, Ahsoka has abandoned those guidelines to some extent. No longer wielding her lightsabers and conservatively using the Force, she has changed a great deal. This was on display in the most recent episode of The Clone Wars, when she used a Jedi mind trick before considering a more respectable course of action. This choice fundamentally broke the Jedi code of honor, especially since she used it to get away with theft.
“Deal No Deal” is the sixth episode of The Clone Wars season 7. Now following Ahsoka’s life beyond the Jedi Order, the focus has been on the Coruscant underworld. She resides now with Rafa and Trace Martez, the former of which takes a suspicious job. Once it is revealed they would be running spice for the Pyke crime syndicate, the three engage in a heated argument. In the midst of it all, Trace dumps their valuable cargo, further complicating the situation. With nothing to offer the deadly gangsters, Ahsoka breaks a sacred tenet of the Jedi’s beliefs to make a quick buck.
To get the credits they would have been owed and not get killed, Ahsoka uses a Jedi mind trick. The leader of the Pykes hands them their credits and sends them on their way. She makes him do this completely against his will. Now and again Jedi have used this powerful ability, from Obi-Wan Kenobi to the all-powerful Rey. The difference is, they employed it for survival without any other gain. Granted, Ahsoka and the Martez sisters could have been killed, so she was certainly backed into a corner. But the same time, they stole from the Pykes. That is a ruthless organization, so swindling them is a bold move even for a Jedi.
The light side of the Force is the morally righteous one compared to the dark side. The Jedi are firm in their ideology and do not divert from it. Even in the face of tremendous danger, they will seek out a diplomatic solution. The Jedi mind trick has certainly been used to get out of sticky situations before, but Ahsoka took the low road by using it to outright coerce the Pyke leader to hand over credits instead of negotiating for more time or some other more principled act.
After some time away from the Jedi, Ahsoka is comfortably bending the rules in her favor. They honed her Force-sensitivity, while also instilling in her their strict sense of morality, but now her sense of responsibility is more flexible than it was in previous seasons of The Clone Wars. While she’s not subject to Jedi dogma anymore, using the Force to coerce someone to hand over money, even from the Pyke syndicate, is something the Jedi Council would have looked down on (although Anakin may have been more forgiving).
