Yellowstone Season 5 Will Be Longest Yet & Split Into Two Parts

20 Crazy Details Behind The Making Of Dragonheart

Yellowstone season 5 will be the longest for the series to date, with 14 episodes, and split into two parts, the first of which will air this summer.

Yellowstone’s fifth season will be the longest yet for the series, with 14 episodes, and will be split into two parts. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the series stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, and Ryan Bingham. The series concluded its fourth season on January 2, 2022, and has produced 39 episodes to date, all of which have been written or co-written by Sheridan.

Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, owners of The Yellowstone, the largest ranch in Montana, as they contend with land developers, a neighboring Indian reservation, and internal family drama. The series falls under the genre of a Neo-Western, using western tropes while being set in the present day, a style also seen in Sheridan’s films Hell or High Water and Wind River. The series has seen one spinoff with Yellowstone: 1883, staring Sam Elliott, with two more spinoffs, 6666, and 1932 in development.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the fifth season of Yellowstone will consist of 14 episodes split into two batches of seven episodes apiece, the first of which will be airing in the summer of 2022. The interim between seasons four and five make for a very short turnaround for a television show. The premiere will also coincide with another Sheridan series, The Tulsa King, starring Sylvester Stallone. That series will premiere its first two episodes on the Paramount Network before moving over to Paramount+, the same way 1883 premiered. Along with Yellowstone, 1883, 1932, 6666, and The Tulsa King, Sheridan is also working on Land Man, starring Billy Bob Thornton; and the second season of Mayor of Kingston, starring Jeremy Renner, all for Paramount+.

Before Yellowstone’s success, Sheridan made his name with his role as David Hale on Sons of Anarchy. He then broke into screenwriting with award-winning projects like Hell or High Water, Wind River, Sicario, and Those Who Wish Me Dead. His work is characterized by its Western settings, lack of exposition, character focus, and straightforward plots.

With so many shows coming up, and with Sheridan’s proclivity for writing every episode of the shows that bear his name, it’s a wonder how one person is able to produce so much content, especially given the tight and specific scheduling of television. With Yellowstone’s success, it’s likely there will be more seasons to think about, not to mention all the planning that will go into the other six shows he’s currently involved in producing. No matter how Sheridan gets season 5 of Yellowstone done, Paramount+ won’t be lacking for content anytime soon, and with such a strong writer at the center of it, that’s unequivocally a good thing.
